Since the wax is the base material of our product, it was important to choose one that aligned with our values. This immediately omitted paraffin wax. When burned, paraffin wax removes toxic fumes such as toulene and benzene. These toxic fumes are associated to increased risks of asthma, migraines, respiratory infections, and even cancers. Additionally, the chemical compounds within paraffin waxes do not dissipate quickly and remain in the atmosphere for a long period of time, accumulating particulate matter and contributing to poor indoor air pollution.
A better alternative to paraffin wax is soy wax. However, research exposed that soy wax is a by-product of the soybean industry. This industry is connected to environmental concerns like deforestation and the over-use of pesticides and fertilizers to grow soybeans. Instant turn off.
Coconut wax is another alternative for paraffin wax. Coconut wax is naturally sourced, like soy wax, but does not use pesticides or fertilizers in its processing. Coconut wax provides a clean burn in comparison to both soy wax and paraffin wax. Also, it captures a better scent throw than the other two waxes. A major plus is that the properties of coconut wax are skin safe -- think of it as a thicker coconut oil! So safe to say, this was the perfect fit for our business.
